Education
* Please refer to Savills “Shanghai International School Guide” for more information.
There is a large selection of international schools exclusively for expatriate children. While most are concentrated in Minhang and Pudong, schools are easily accessible from many parts of Shanghai. Most educational programs offer pre-school through secondary school teaching. There are also many universities in Shanghai.
The Expatriate Community
Social Community
For a trailing spouse, creating a social network is crucial in the early stages of relocating to Shanghai. There is a strong support network developed by other non-working spouses for the specific purpose of welcoming newly arrived expatriates. Getting involved in this networking process shortens the time of social integration and alleviates the feeling of isolation often felt by trailing spouses, dislocated from the kind of active lifestyle they may have enjoyed at home. This holds true even more so for spouses who used to be employed before relocating. Groups include the Shanghai Expatriates Association (www.seashanghai.org), Britsabroad (www.britsabroadshanghai.com), Australian Womens’ Social Group (www.awsg.org), American Womens’ Club (www.awcshanghai.org), German Club Shanghai (www.schanghai.com/deutscherclub), Cercle Francophone de Shanghai (www.cerclefrancophonedeshanghai.com), etc. Please check your Savills “Shanghai Orientation Guide” for a listing, or look up online.
Social Clubs
There are a large number of social clubs in Shanghai including the China Book Club, Friends of Hope charity and the Rotary Club of Shanghai. Chances are you will be able to find an organization that meets your interests. Please check your Savills “Shanghai Orientation Guide” for a listing, or look up online.
Business Associations
AmCham, BritCham, AustCham, EuroCham – the full range of national chambers of commerce established in Shanghai offer assistance to their members. They are a useful tool and can provide interesting information, seminars and lectures on how to do business in China, as well as providing a lively arena for socializing and networking.
* A full list of organizations with contact details is provided in the Savills City Orientation Guide (provided upon arrival).
